Greetings from th’ Left End O’ Nowhere!

My poor, long-sufferin’, sweet BFF has been “goin’ thru it” lately over this hi-speed internet stuff.  I mean th’ chile’s been WORKIN’ it, tryin’ t’ get a reliable connection here @ th’ house.  She tried HughesNet first, an’ as reported here-in, that was a bust!  She’s got ComCast in her apt. in Occoquan an’ jus’ loves it; so her next step was to inquire about gettin’ it here, too.

Now, to understand the dilemma totally, an’ th’ title at th’ top o’ this post, you have to understand where “here” is.  Look on a map o’ Virginia an’ find Fredericksburg.  Look for Colonial Beach.  We’re an hour East of Fredericksburg, just downriver from Colonial Beach, on th’ Potomac River.  We’re not really in Montross; but we can get there in ten min.  We’re outta town, on th’ river.

So, to continue the saga, BFF called ComCast and asked, specifically, if they serviced out area.  “Yes!”  So she ordered their package o’ “stuff” an’ plunked down her hard-earned green… or plastic as th’ case may be.  Then cancelled HughesNet an’ e-mailed me.  “‘Got a surprise for you!”  Well th’ “surprise” was on her!  HughesNet, on reciept of her cancellation, cut off service.  No surprise, there.

But while all this was goin’ on, I was in th’ shop workin’ on th’ plane.  When I “came up for air”, there was a surprise!  I couldn’t check my e-mail!  I couldn’t check a website!  I was dead in th’ water!  Sur-PRISE!!

But it’s not over yet!  Oh no; that’d be too easy!  I’ll copy&paste her note I got, after I got back to my dial-up thing, and after their modem stuff had arrived in th’ snail-mail:

Hi Hon,’

I spoke at length with the Comcast people.  They said that they ONLY offer cable TV in our area (something about the old Adelphia cables need to be upgraded to allow internet use).  I asked why I was able to order it online and get the wireless router in the mail, etc.  The rep I spoke with said that the order should not have gone through.  I tried another service that came up on a Google search, which said that they don’t cover our area, but the Comcast does!  Talk about going around and around in circles!  This is so frustrating!

So now we’re looking at Va. Broadband.  They’ve got an antenna, here in the neighborhood!  But they’re even more expensive than HughesNet!  Now that’s frustratin!  But the weekend will tell…

But here at the Left End o’ Nowhere, we’re a sorta captive audience.  Apparently th’ Wire Factory ran out before anybody could run one out here!

It’s been said that the Northern Neck is about 40 yrs behind th’ rest o’ th’ world.  We didn’t get our 1st McD’s until about 5 yrs ago; that should clue you.  An’ I’m findin’ it holds true technologically, too.
